John Marty is a strong advocate for government ethics, environmental protection, economic & racial justice, and health care reform. He is a highly respected and experienced state senator
I am a college student and I support Senator John Marty because he's a leading advocate for Minnesotans' physical and mental health. In addition to fighting for a $17/ hour minimum wage, a carbon neutral Minnesota, reproductive rights and sexual health, and adequate funding for education, John Marty is the author of the Minnesota health plan. We need John Marty in the Senate!
Senator John Marty has provided leadership far beyond just passing legislation. He uses his power to protect people. When I blew the whistle on the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency's attempt to hide evidence of PFAS pollution, he supported me and tried to hold the MPCA accountable. His work is critical to the wellbeing of Minnesota.
As a colleague, I came to appreciate that Senator Marty is one of the hardest working legislators in the state. He’s collaborative and helpful when working together on an issue. He does his homework, studying issues and listening to experts on the subject of a piece of legislation. He listens to and values the input of colleagues. And he sticks with those issues that take long-term dedication to make progress.
John Marty’s list of accomplishments is long and impressive, but more importantly, his voice in the Senate is unique and irreplaceable. It is an ethical and principled focus, invariably standing up for the people, the environment, and good government. Senator Marty is a formidable and gifted legislator. With unceasing energy, he presses forth every day, carrying the vision of a society that works for all of us and the vision of a Legislature that acts with the integrity and openness that people expect.
Senator John Marty has been a lifelong champion of social and economic justice. I have known and worked with John for many years and have always appreciated his personal integrity. His deeply rooted values are evident in the way he offers real substance, not the typical political lip-service. I have seen it in his tireless work for healthcare for all and in his push to ensure safe and secure housing for everyone, especially the most vulnerable. John works with people who are voiceless in the political process, and in his own caring voice, speaks out with courage against the powers that oppress many of our neighbors.
I first met John many years ago when I was a single mother with two children, two and three years old. I could only afford a low-income apartment and was not receiving child support. We lived hand to mouth. One day, Senator Marty knocked on my door. I was surprised to see an elected official willing to actually walk miles, knocking on doors to assure he was representing his constituents effectively!
I really connect with John Marty on how he values taking care of people and understands how systems create and perpetuate inequality. John frequently references the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. quote that “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.” I couldn’t agree more. Without good health care, it’s challenging to succeed or grow. Employment, education, stable housing–health can be a barrier to all these things. If you are a low wage worker and can’t afford premiums, you walk a thin line between rationing care because of cost and avoiding illness and injury that prevents you from working. And if you are a person of color, these risks are all amplified. I support Senator Marty because I want to be represented by someone who understands how the system works, as well as how to work the system to improve the lives of his constituents and all Minnesotans. He’s shown many times he knows how to work across the aisle and get things done in a civil way. He also has the fortitude to get things done. John has shown he can take punches and still keep pushing. He’s not afraid of the fight.
John doesn't play games. When he says something, he means it. When he says he will do something, he does it. John Marty has been on the leading edge of the progressive movement in Minnesota for years. Mainstream DFL positions today on health care, voting rights, racial justice, social justice, and the environment were things John championed before they were mainstream.
John is a delightful, hardworking, honest, and moral individual. He has the knowledge and the personality that are needed to lead effectively. In addition, John always listens when constituents have questions or want to discuss a topic.
Our natural environment has never faced the compounding crises we see today. Yet, too many political leaders act like business as usual will get us where we need to go...I can assure you Sen. John Marty is the champion we need at this critical time to protect our future.
As the mother of an adult son with serious and persistent mental illness and a former Minnesota legislator, I can say unequivocally that John has worked harder and done more for mental health than any other member of the Senate.
Senator Marty received the Minnesota Nurses Association’s highest honor, the Paul & Sheila Wellstone Social Justice Award, for his lifelong commitment to bettering the lives of others by giving all people access to quality health care. John’s unwavering voice on behalf of those who have none is clear and undiminished by political tides.
I met John Marty and his family at Holden Village about 25 years ago. Right away, I appreciated that when I talked to him he would listen closely. John treats everyone like they are important. Talk with him. Then you will know.
There is no other political figure like him in Minnesota. Whether you care about climate change, environmental issues, single payer health care, reproductive health, or the preservation of our representative democratic form of government, John Marty is the smart, tough, and effective leader you need and want in the Minnesota Senate.
Sen. Marty is relentless and creative in looking at big problems and solutions to address complex issues. I am not surprised to read an article or opinion piece in the StarTribune or hear a story on MPR about a proposal from Sen. Marty that takes a new approach or perspective to develop effective public policies.
I support John for lots of reasons, but the biggest one is his integrity. John has served our state and my area for over 30 years, and has fully supported marijuana legalization, LGBTQ+ rights, and single payer healthcare for his entire political career. Many politicians change positions on a whim to sway voters, but John has always remained consistent in his beliefs.
John Marty has been a tireless advocate for public schools at all levels--pre-kindergarten through college. He knows that nothing is more important than our kids.
Senator Marty listens to all voters’ stories. I have seen and heard how he actively listens and does not interrupt or jump in with a quick response. That ability to listen and see issues has prompted him to write comprehensive bills on complex problems. He is willing to take a stand!
John has proven he is an informed, diligent and courageous leader in the struggle to address the climate crisis and the fight for a livable planet for us, our children and grandchildren. John accepts no special interest money – No PAC money. No lobbyist money. No soft money. No contributions over $200. He is not beholden to the BIG, DARK money in politics that prevents government from serving people first.
I grew up in a political family and learned that the reason you commit to a public life is to try to make life better, more fair, more just, more equitable, especially for the less powerful in society who have little to no voice in decision making. This defines Senator John Marty's life's work. More importantly, perhaps, I learned that the principal trait to look for when supporting a candidate is integrity. I know of no political leader that has more integrity than Senator Marty. We need to keep this experienced progressive leader working for us.
I have door knocked with John and have seen how much he cares about connecting with people, hearing their stories and working to meet the people's needs. His service reflects his efforts to do just that and his record shows his many accomplishments to fulfill those needs. We need his continued trusted service and leadership.
